Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

August 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In honor of those who lost their lives, in recognition of the Hibakusha, and to promote a peaceful world, commemorative events were held in Hiroshima and across the world. Several members of the Mapping Nuclear Legacies team attended these events. This page hosts their reflections.

Commemorations for the bombing of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki occur throughout the world. One of the largest events outside of Japan, called From Hiroshima to Hope, took place at Green Lake Park in Seattle.

A Commemoration of Hiroshima: Manhasset, NY

On August 6, 2025, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, located in Manhasset, NY, hosted a commemoration for the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Overall, the commemoration concentrated on recognizing the impact of bombs in the past, shifting our current mindset to how we can make changes for future generations.

When I was invited to attend the Peace Pilgrimage of Catholic U.S. Universities as an intern for Mapping Nuclear Legacies, I had no idea how meaningful and enlightening it would be. We landed in Hiroshima at about 9 or 10 in the morning, dropped our luggage at the hotel, and then took a tram to the Hiroshima Peace Park and Memorial Museum.
